History of Villa Apolon

Story of Hvar or Pharos, as it was known then

The story of Hvar begins in the famous Antique times, more precisely in the 4th century BC, when the island was colonized by Greeks from the island of Pharos.

Creator of the villa

Don Šime Ljubić, one of the most prominent citizens of Hvar Island, Croatian archaeologist, historian and writer, through the construction of his mausoleum and villa has united two of his greatest passions - history and Hvar. It is then no wonder that Don Šime named his villa Apolon, a famous Greek god born on Pharos, who became its protector.

How it became a boutique hotel

In order to bring this iconic villa back to life and to make it a contemporary heritage hotel, it underwent a redesign to make it a modern, fully-equipped villa. For this reason, the main guiding principle behind the renovation of the villa and mausoleum was to continue in Don Šime Ljubić’ steps and use modern contemporary design in a Mediterranean spirit and climate to preserve Hvar Antique heritage and Don Šime’s symbolism.
